Instrumental Ensemble Lesson Plan

   
Grade Level: 4th grade beginning band
   
Approximate Time: 1 class period (40 minutes)
   
Objectives: 1. By the end of the period of instruction, the students will play with greater accuracy and attention to the style, rhythms and rests in Aura Lee.
2. By the end of the period of instruction, the students will have played from the beginning of When the Saints until measure 20.
3. Students will also be able to identify whether they are playing the melody or the harmony.
   
Standards: MENC 2 (Performing on instruments, alone and with others)
MENC 5 (Reading and notating music)
NY 1 (Creating, Performing and Participating in the arts)
NY 2 (Knowing and using arts materials and resources)
   
Materials:
  1. Aura Lee, N. Forte, Forte Publications - score and band set
  2. When the Saints Go Marching In, M. Story, Alfred Publishing Co. - score and band set
   
Warm-up:
  1. Bb Concert Scale, whole notes.

  2. Scale, watching me for the changes.  Include dynamic changes, cut-off's and change durations of notes.

   
Aura Lee:
  1. Everybody at the END – listening for correct rhythms, rests and accents

  2. Be sure that Jenny on the snare drum has correct rhythm

  3. Run through song from 21 to end – listening for dynamic change at 25, trumpet bells up, smooth playing.

   
When the Saints:
  1. Melody discussion.
  2. Trumpets and Flutes at 4/5

  3. Low brass at 5: Melody or ________ “Harmony”

  4. Play as written till 11

  5. At 13: FL and Low Brass

  6. At 13: Cl, Tpt, Sax

  7. Stop at 19. Re-run.

  8. If time permits, start at 20 – SAX TPT / FL CL

   
Assessment: Students are constantly being assessed for their posture, behavior  and playing ability.
